RECENT CONSTITUTIONAL EVENTS
 

12.11.2008: Luxembourg - Constitutional Amendment

The Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies adopted a constitutional amendment that makes the Grand Dukes role in legislation merely ceremonial, similar to other European countries with a monarch (Jurist 2008).

 

9.28.2008: Ecuador - New Constitution

Ecuador's constitution was promulgated by national referendum. The new constitution dramatically increases the power of the President (Jurist 2008).

 

9.26.2008: Turkmenistan - New Constitution

The People's Council of Turkmenistan promulgated a new constituion. Included in the new constitution are provisions for multiparty elections and a president with limited authority (Jurist 2008).

 

8.07.2008: Maldives - New Constitution

Malidives President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, signed a new constitution into law. The new constitution provides for more dmeocratic governance and incrased human rights (Jurist 2008).

 

7.24.2008: Senegal - Constitutional Amendment

Senegal promulgated an amendment to its constitution. The amendment will give the judiciary jurisdiction to prosecute former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre (Jurist 2008).

 

7.21.2008: France - Constitutional Amendment

The French parliament passed an amendment to the constitution that will strengthen the parliament while placing limits on the power of the executive (Jurist 2008).

 

6.17.2008: Mexico - Constitutional Amendment

The President signed into law a constitutional amendment that will revolutionize the Mexican judicial system (Jurist 2008).

 

5.26.2008: Myanmar - New Constitution

Myanmar's new constitution was approved by referendum with more than 92% of voters in favor of the charter. The new constitution will further consolidate the military's role in the government, even after the democratic elections promised in 2010 (Rueters 2008).

 

4.8.2008: Kosovo - New Constitution

The Assembly of Kosovo adopted the draft constitution. This Constitution is schedule to come into effect on June 15, 2008 (Jurist 2008).

 

2.22.2008: Turkey - Constitutional Amendments

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey promulgated two amendments. The first eases the ban on Islamic headscarves and the second recognizes equal rights to higher education (Jurist 2007).

 

2.17.2008: Kosovo - Declares Independence from Serbia

Kosovo declares independence from Serbia. They will continue to use their 2001 Provisional Constitution until their draft constitution is ratified.

 

12.14.2007: Pakistan - Constitutional Amendment

President Musharraf unilaterally adopted the second amendment of the year as allowed under the Provisional Constitution Order of November 5, 2007.

 

11.21.2007: Pakistan - Constitutional Amendment

President Musharraf unilaterally adopted his first amendment as allowed under the Provisional Constitution Order of November 5, 2007.

 

11.1.2007: Zimbabwe - Constitutional Amendment

President Mugabe of Zimbabwe signed an amendment into law, which allows Mugabe to choose his replacement (Jurist 2007).

 

10.23.2007: Montenegro - New Constitution

The Parliament of the Republic of Montenegro promulgated a new constitution. The new constitutions is expected to prepare Montenegro for EU entry by 2015 (Jurist 2007).

 

10.23.2007: Kyrgyz Republic - Constitutional Amendment

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev promulgated the most recent round of amendments to the Kyrgyz Constiuttion. The most recent round of amendments follows the Constitutional Court's ruling in September that the early 2007 and late 2006 amendments were illegal, effectively restoring the 2003 constitution.

 

8.19.2007: Thailand - New Constitution

Thai people approve the new Thai constitution. The new constitution replaces the 1997 one and ends nearly a year of military rule (Jurist 2007).

 

5.22.2007: Kazakhstan - Constitutional Amendment

President Nursultan Nazarbayev promulgated a constitutional amendment that removed term limits on his presidency. Under the amendment, all future presidents will be required to abide by the term limits in the constitution.

 

3.26.2007: Egypt - Constitutional Amendments

Egypt passes a series of 34 constitutional amendments by referendum. However, turnout in the referendum was extremely low.

 

03.09.2007: Nepal - Constitutional Amendment

Nepal amends their interim constitution to change the country into a federal state and increase representation of the southern region.

 

01.15.2007: Nepal - Interim Constitution

Nepal's House of Representatives passes an interim constitution. The interim constitution dissolves the current House of Representatives and creates an interim Parliament charged with creating a new constitution (Jurist 2007).

 

1.15.2007 - Kyrgyz Republic - Constitutional Amendment

Kyrgyz President promulgated several amendments, effecitively removing the limits place on him by the new constiuttion in November.

 

11.9.2006 - Kyrgyz Republic - New Constitution

Kyrgyz President promulgated constitutional amendments that severely limit his power. The President's approval follows a week of protests in the capital following his earlier veto of the amendments.

 

10.01.2006: Thailand - Interim Constitution

Thailand's King approves an interim constitution written largely by the military (Jurist 2006).

 

09.19.2006: Thailand - Constitution Suspended

The Royal Thai Army led a coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and immediately suspended the 1991 Constitution (Jurist 2006).

 

06.25.2006: Mauritania - Constitutional Amendment

The people of Mauritania overwhelmingly approved an amendment to their constitution. The amendment will limit the President to 2 terms in office and reduces the length of each term from 6 to 5 years, among other changes (The Arabist 2006).

 

04.25.2006: Lithuania - Constitutional Amendment

The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania passed amendments to their constitution in preparation for the introduction of the euro (The Bank of Lithuania 2006).

 

03.28.2006: Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago passed the Constitution (Amendment) Act, 2006.
